What Is Numismatics?

Numismatics is a fancy word for coin collecting. It also encompasses more than just collecting coins and also covers studying the history, manufacture and ability to authenticate rare coins and currency.

What Types of Coins Are There?

There are an almost endless number of different types of coins. Coins have been used as a means of exchange for thousands of years. Typically they were made out of a precious metal but not always.

Traditionally they were made by rulers or emperors and usually had some sort of special art work on them to help differentiate different coins. Sometimes the artwork can be extremely important because what one person may consider pretty or appealing may not appeal to someone else.

Corey Chappell specializes in United States coins and currency minted after the Civil War.

Are Other Coins Worth Money?

There are non US coins that can have Numismatic value. Unfortunately most modern foreign coins are not as collectible and usually don't have as much value as their US counterparts. We don't usually deal with foreign coins for this reason. The exception would be if it's made out of a precious metal such as a Chinese Panda or a Krugerrand.

What Is A Certified Coin?

A coins value is determined by combining its rarity with its current condition. Coins are graded on a scale of 1-70 with 70 meaning the coin is literally perfectly flawless. VERY few coins are ever graded as a 70. It's a VERY high standard.

There are professional coin grading companies that will grade, or certify, your coin for a fee. You get the coin back in a special protective holder with all of the information about the coin and its grade visible. The industry leader is PCGS and while there are other coin grading companies out there most collectors prefer PCGS certified coins,
